A 122 mile (196kms) run over 6 days, up the stunningly beautiful Eastern Highlands of Scotland, guided all the way. 3 star hotels, baggage transfers.

Tour description

Meet in Edinburgh City Centre (8.30am) or at Edinburgh Airport (9am) on the Sunday 4th October.

Overall, the route passes by two of Scotland's greatest salmon fishing rivers (Dee and Spey), some spectacular mountain scenery in the Cairngorms National Park, many historic landmarks (including Balmoral Castle), beautiful lochs and glens as well as several of the world's best known malt whisky distilleries..... and finishing on the stunning Moray coast where you may catch a glimpse of the UK's largest pod of bottle nose dolphins.
Day 1
24.5 miles (39kms) Alyth (near Perth) to Glen Clova. Starting on the southern edge of the Highlands. The route takes you from the Scottish lowlands area into the beautiful Angus glens; a truly amazing wilderness.

Day 2
18 miles (29kms). Glen Clova to Balmoral. From the Angus Glens to the majesty of the Queen's Balmoral Castle Estate; running around the beautiful Loch Muick and on to the finish at the Royal Lochnagar Distillery.

Day 3
10 miles (16kms); the relative 'rest' day! Across the northern side of the Balmoral Castle Estate; through some of the country's largest ancient Caledonian forests.

Day 4
21 miles (34kms). Invercauld to Tomintoul; another wonderful wilderness route (all off road) with a finish in one of Scotland's highest villages.

Day 5
25.5 miles (41kms). Tomintoul to Dufftown. The route takes you through some of the great Speyside whisky glens; such as Glen Livet and Glen Fiddich.

Day 6
23 miles (37kms). Dufftown to Spey Bay on the Moray Coast. The route emerges from the Highlands and takes you down to the coast where the River Spey meets the sea.

Day 7
minibus transfer back to Edinburgh (arrival c. 1pm) on Saturday 10th October 2015.

Please note that Running The Highlands reserves the right to alter the route and/or vary the distance of a day's run in the event of extreme weather conditions (i.e. for health and safety considerations).

  • two running guides
